When Hendrik Deckers founded CIONET in 2005, his goal wasn’t merely to create a professional network. He envisioned a community where technology and human connection could intersect to empower digital leaders across industries. Today, that vision is a reality, with CIONET standing as Europe’s largest and most dynamic community of CIOs and IT executives, boasting over 10,000 members in eight countries.
As CIONET celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2025, we sat down with Hendrik to reflect on the journey that led to this milestone and the future of digital leadership in a world reshaped by technology.
For Hendrik, the idea for CIONET was born from a fusion of his passions. "I’ve always been drawn to two things: technology and the power of bringing people together," he explains. "CIONET became the perfect way to combine those interests while addressing the unique needs of digital leaders."
Before launching CIONET, Hendrik’s career path was anything but conventional. Armed with a master’s degree in biology and postgraduate studies in philosophy and economics, his early work included data analytics and a series of dot-com ventures. By the age of 36, Hendrik felt ready to channel his entrepreneurial instincts into a platform that would redefine how CIOs and IT executives connect and collaborate.
I wanted to create something meaningful - not just a network but a community where knowledge and innovation thrive.
CIONET’s journey began in Belgium, the community quickly expanded into the Netherlands, fostering cross-border collaboration. Soon after, CIONET launched in Spain and the UK, marking a key milestone with the first-ever Country Managers Meeting, bringing together leadership from different regions. Growth continued with the expansion into Italy and France, strengthening its presence in key European markets. Today, CIONET is active in Belgium, Portugal, Spain, the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland, as well as in LATAM, driving innovation and connection among digital leaders worldwide.

CIONET’s success lies in its ability to bring people together, whether through local events, international conferences, or its signature programmes. "Our mission is simple: to help digital leaders realise their ambitions and become the best professionals they can be," Hendrik shares.
One of CIONET’s flagship initiatives, TRIBES, exemplifies this ethos by encouraging IT leaders to collaborate on real-world challenges. The Women of CIONET - Female Leadership Circle addresses critical representation gaps in the digital sphere.
“The Female Leadership Circle is a catalyst for change,” Hendrik notes. “It creates a space where women lead discussions, inspire others, and challenge the status quo in tech leadership. Building on its success in Belgium, we’re proud to see the program now making its mark in Germany.”
Reflecting on two decades of change, Hendrik highlights the transformative role of the CIO. "Twenty years ago, IT was often viewed as a cost centre—a back-office function," he says. "Today, CIOs are integral to boardroom discussions, driving digital transformation and shaping business strategies."
CIONET has played a pivotal role in elevating the profession, celebrating the contributions of CIOs through initiatives like the European CIO of the Year Awards. "Modern digital leadership isn’t just about managing systems; it’s about creating value and leading organisations through disruption," Hendrik adds.
With over 130 Leadership Deep Dive interviews with top C-level executives, Hendrik has gained unique insights into the evolving demands of digital leadership. His conversations with industry leaders have underscored the strategic shift CIOs must navigate—from technology enablers to business visionaries, influencing everything from operational efficiency to customer experience and innovation.
As technology continues to evolve, Hendrik sees both opportunities and challenges on the horizon. "AI and quantum computing are game-changers," he asserts. "They’re not just incremental innovations—they’re rewriting the rules of what’s possible."
Hendrik believes these technologies will redefine industries and societies, requiring digital leaders to adapt faster than ever. "The role of the CIO will only grow in importance as these advancements become mainstream," he predicts.
As CIONET celebrates its 20th anniversary, Hendrik is focused on the next chapter. With expanding CIONET’s event calendar and deepening its impact, he remains committed to empowering digital leaders.
"Technology and leadership are two of the most powerful tools we have to address global challenges, from sustainability to economic resilience," Hendrik says.
When asked about his advice to future leaders, Hendrik reflects: "Follow your passions, surround yourself with driven people, and take responsibility for your path. Life isn’t a rehearsal—make every moment count."
As CIONET enters its third decade, it stands as a testament to Hendrik Deckers’ vision and the collective power of its members. Here’s to the future of digital leadership—and the transformative role CIONET will continue to play.
