Orange Cyberdefense Cy-Xplorer 2024

Commonly referred to as Ransomware, "Cyber Extortion" (Cy-X) encompasses any form of computer crime where the security of a digital asset (Confidentiality, Integrity, or Availability) is compromised and exploited to extort payment.

Navigating the cyber extortion threat landscape

Since the start of 2020, Orange Cyberdefense has been monitoring the threat of Cyber Extortion (Cy-X). Over this period, we have compiled a comprehensive dataset detailing over 11,200 Cy-X victims. This report, enriched with technical insights from our CERT and CSIRT teams, offers a unique perspective on the scale, scope, nature, and likely trajectory of the Cy-X threat.

Key findings from the report:
  • Rapid Growth: The number of observable victims has surged by 77% in the past year, with 60 distinct threat actors responsible for 4,374 victims during this period.
  • Underreported Incidents: Data from recent Law Enforcement actions against Cy-X operations indicate that the actual number of victims may be at least 50% higher than recorded incidents.
  • Global Reach: Since 2020, 75% of countries worldwide have seen businesses impacted by Cy-X. Victims span all 20 industries classified by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), affecting businesses of every size. Small businesses are 4.2 times more likely to be impacted than medium and large businesses combined.
