On May 11th over 50 CIONET members gathered to discuss the burning topic of how to capitalise on the Internet of Things. Around 50% of the audience already has tangible IoT projects running, while the other half are just in the phase of discovery.

With four very tangible case studies from different industries, the CIONET conference offered both audiences a profound overview of how companies are integrating IoT within their operations, as well as fresh ideas on how to turn IoT projects into business opportunities.

  • Professor Sidharta Gautama from the University of Ghent explained how IoT and Big Data can help to solve mobility issues;
  • Johan De Geyter, CEO of Zembro, showcased the use of IoT in a bracelet for elderly people, allowing their relatives to keep 'an eye' on them and, in time, to monitor their health remotely;
  • Chrisine Billaud, Director Business Technology of Volvo Construction Equipments gave her perspective on how IoT enables new business models in the usually traditional market of construction equipments;
  • Paul Poelmans and Yves Claeys from Verhaert showed the intrinsic innovation capabilities of IoT trhough an example from the insurance industry.

From the feedback we received a huge majority of the attendees appreciated the diversity of the cases, and stated to have gathered valuable insights and ideas to take to their organisations. We wish to thank all the speakers and the participants to this event, which for sure will continue to remain a main focus area in our events and our research!
