As smart devices proliferate across operational environments — from sensors on factory lines and GPS trackers in logistics fleets to wearables in healthcare and connected systems in smart cities — the integration of Managed IoT (MiOT) is accelerating. But with it comes a surge in cybersecurity risks. No longer isolated or air-gapped, OT systems are becoming fully networked, remotely accessible, and deeply entwined with IT. This creates a vulnerable, highly complex digital mesh, one where a single compromised device can trigger physical, financial, and reputational consequences.

Q&A with Jing Leong, Clough
What challenges do the XDR capabilities of Trend Micro Vision One solve?
As we’re starting to become a global company, we need to see the visibility of all our devices in our infrastructure environment. In today’s digital world, we’re moving towards a decentralized ICT world where visibility has been missed. Part of the reason we were drawn to Trend Micro’s ecosystem was their ability to correlate information from the multiple-layers of the decentralized environment that we have – from laptops, mobiles, tablets, servers, multi-clouds for AWS, Azure, Oracle Cloud. They have really helped us. This is why we selected the product, and we now have good visibility as to what we can do with it. The product’s automation helps us analyze and detect. The crucial factor we looked for at the beginning was virtual patching, given the fact that we have legacy environments.
What benefits have you seen from extending visibility, detection, and response beyond the endpoint?
This gave us great insight into which documents are floating around our data environment. This gives us the response to deal with legal cases and the extraction of legal documents. For example, we have the ability to search and filter through what we need from it – that is one way. And of course, there is the normal security aspect: when we detect a threat, we can pinpoint it to the processor/the file itself in multiple streams from the multi-cloud because that multi-cloud is one data stream that we have. From the emails we see now from ransomware, credit card transactions, etc. we can go through that whole trail, which we could not do before – that gave us very good insight.
What is the value of integrating the mobile security layer?
The value of [the mobile security layer] will be huge for us. 2020 is the year of decentralizing and flexible work conditions. We have offered tablets and mobiles as part of our onboarding process. We would have never been able to do that. We need the visibility of what they are doing at home – that will be a game changer for us. We are in the testing phase; this will provide clarity as to what we can deploy and control. A main focus for the upcoming year is to mitigate risk. We are better suited to work remotely – I think this will be a good stepping stone for us.
