The European CIO of the Year 2018 awards recognize the success of CIOs who have increased their organisation’s competitiveness by using information and communication technologies to create significant business value.
With 23 amazing finalists from 8 European countries, the winners of each of the 3 categories - Public Sector, Regional Responsibilities and Global Responsibilities - and of the 2 special awards for the European Digital Leader of the Year and the European Digital Innovator of the Year were announced on June 11th during CIONEXT.

Bouke Hoving, Executive VP Networks & IT at KPN was distinguished with the European CIO of the Year 2018 in the category of Global Responsibilities. Leading KPN into becoming the new digital agile telco of the future, some of his accomplishments involve transforming from a product-oriented telco into a digital telco and turning a highly complex operating model into an agile and lean model.
Emiliano Sorrenti, Chief Information Officer at the Aeroporti di Roma was distinguished with the European CIO of the Year 2018 in the category of Regional Responsibilities. Some of his accomplishments include building a fully functional connected airport with real-time operations that are predictive of organisational behaviour in a full transformation journey delivered at speed that enabled it, in just a couple of years, to be recognized as the best airport in Europe according to the Airport Council International.
Jaime Sanz, Chief Information Officer at Correos was granted the European CIO of the Year 2018 in the Public Sector category. With the very specific and hard to tackle challenges organisations in the public sector face, some of his achievements include transforming a traditional mail operator into a parcel operator, post offices into shops and ensuring the whole organisation with more than 50.000 employees was fully engaged in the journey.
Stefan Würtemberger, Chief Digital Officer, RENZ Service GmbH was awarded the European Digital Innovator of the Year 2018 award which was handed by Geert Lejon from Cognizant Belgium. This award recognises the exceptional achievements of CIOs that stood out in terms of out-of-the-box, innovative thinking with tangible business results. No pun intended, one of his main accomplishments was the creation of a revolutionary parcel box system - myRENZbox - that enables parcel delivery and dispatch from home or office.
Ana Cristina Neves, Director of the Department for the Information Society at Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia was distinguished with the European Digital Leader of the Year 2018 award which was presented by Christian Combes from Deloitte Belgium. This award celebrates the achievements of exceptional leaders from outside of the IT community who have contributed substantially to the awareness or the application of digital solutions that benefit their organisation or the society as a whole. One of her main achievements is the launch of “The Strategy and Action Plan for Digital Employability”, which set up the “Portuguese Coalition for Digital Jobs” and contributed towards the goals of the Europe 2020 strategy.
