Recent discussions with CIOs show that there are different factors driving a ‘cloud-first’ strategy ranging from infrastructural renewal, modernisation of back office processes to full scale business transformation. Most CIOs are under immense pressure to cut costs and improve business continuity by adopting a cloud-based IT infrastructure, but few have grasped the bigger prize of business innovation that cloud enables.

Digital leaders such as Amazon have demonstrated that cloud platforms such as AWS hold the key to delighting their customers through continuous service innovation. Traditional businesses need to emulate digital leaders if they are to remain relevant. But many of them must tackle decades of legacy that cannot be easily replaced. The biggest challenge is to leverage critical data by employing new tools and agile methods that are largely cloud based.
