Where can agents and modernisation simplify the application landscape and improve how work gets done?

 Your application roadmap already sets out what to upgrade, replace and retire over the next few years. Those decisions reflect business needs, technical constraints and substantial investment. But as agents offer new ways to coordinate work across systems, which assumptions deserve another look before the next stage is funded?

An agent might help extend the useful life of an application by making its capabilities available within a different workflow. It could also add complexity while leaving unreliable data, poor process fit or costly maintenance untouched. And a planned replacement may still be the right decision. The question is what evidence would justify changing course, and what would justify staying with the roadmap.

Where does our current portfolio support capabilities that distinguish the organisation, and where are we maintaining complexity that adds little value? What should remain standard software, and where would something specific be worth building? Which modernisation needs could agents address, and which remain regardless? And how much of our roadmap reflects our own priorities rather than vendor choices and past commitments?
