We may be asking the wrong question about AI. Most organisations are still focused on productivity: Which tools? Which models? Which use cases? How much cost can we remove? But AI is rapidly moving beyond tools. Machines are beginning to remember, reason, recommend and act. Soon they may coordinate much of the work that organisations and people once performed themselves.
So, what happens next?
If machines write the code, conduct the analysis, manage the workflow and increasingly recommend the decisions, what exactly are humans there to do? What happens when AI removes the junior work through which tomorrow’s experts once learned their craft? When intelligence becomes abundant, what becomes valuable? When machines know more about us than any manager, colleague, or even ourselves, who gets to decide what that knowledge is used for?
And there is a deeper question for every CIO:
Are we building technology that helps people become more capable authors of their lives or systems so intelligent and convenient that humans gradually stop writing the script at all?
